lemon water is the new black (saturday seconds and natural body lovin' combined)

when saturday seconds and natural body lovin' combines, you get health with the added benefits of a bargain! (oh, the dorky humour strikes again!)

i am an avid water drinker. one and a half to two litres a day, no problem. but what goes in, must come out! and let's just say, often. i was talking about this consequence of my love of hydration with a natural foodie friend of mine, and she suggested that i try putting lemon in my water to help my body absorb the water better, as she'd tried this and she had noticed immediate benefits.

so, me being me, i did a bit of research into lemon water, and whether it's worth the benefits.
and this is what i found:
  • to begin with, lemon is an antiseptic and an antibacterial (one of the reasons your mum or grandma mixed it with warm water and honey to help relieve a sore throat)
  • lemons are full of vitamin c! so consumption boosts your immune system.
  • lemons are alkalising: now, this may sound foreign to some people, but the body's ideal pH is just a tiny bit above neutral (in the alkaline direction). however, the majority of people's diets are insanely high in acidic input (think anything high in sugar, or even more specific things like tea and certain fruits) leaving our bodies massively out of balance. this leads to a huge amount of issues because our body can not function properly in an acidic environment.
  • lemon relieves heartburn, indigestion and bloating.
  • many people say "oh but lemon is acidic". when you first ingest it, yes it is, but as your body processes it, it has an alkaline effect on the inside (where it counts).
  • lemon is a detoxifier. drinking lemon water first thing in the morning stimulates the body's natural cleansing process.
  • regularly drinking lemon water will help clear your skin. many toxins that build up in your colon find your way out of your body through your skin, resulting in acne breakouts and other allergy skin conditions. lemon water acts as a cleanser for your bowel, washing out toxins before they create any problems.
  • lemon water helps with weight loss by acting as a blood sugar stabiliser that keeps your metabolism up (and boosting weight loss).
  • lemon water has next to no calories, so it's a no guilt alternative to juice or the evil fizzy drink.
  • lemons contain calcium, magnesium and potassium; three essential minerals for your body.
  • and lemon juice has been known to relieve the symptoms of asthma.
so, in light of all of that, i went on an op shopping mission to find the following (essential ingredients for making lemon water):
  • 1 fruit juicer

  • 1 glass pitcher (keep it natural sister, no plastic for me)
  • lemons

and what success i had! (i even found a stylised 'good fortune' kanji (japanese character) coaster to put my pitcher on after i've juiced. it was a dollar. i love it)

for one litre of water, juice half a lemon (pick out the seeds, unless you like your juice crunchy) and mix it in. the taste wasn't over powering, but it also wasn't weak enough to put me off (i hate weak drinks, haha).
initially it's a bid odd, but now that i am used to it i really enjoy it!

natural body lovin' part three

the next body lovin' installment comes in the form of this cute little bottle:

pretty smelling and indefinitely useful, i present to you: lavender oil.

lavender itself is a very basic scent used in a large range of products from air freshener to laundry detergent to simple perfume. however, it's uses extend beyond making different parts of yourself, your belongings and your home smell good.

as an essential oil, lavender is used in aromatherapy as a relaxation aid which also helps to reduce anxiety. it is also used to relieve tension headaches, coughs and respiratory problems when added to a vaporiser.
it can also be used as a mosquito repellent (i've never tried this one, so if you have, please leave a comment about how effective it is!)

lavender oil can also be applied to small cuts and burns for pain relief and as an antiseptic, plus it also aids with healing, reducing scarring.
oh, and for insect bites and stings (it helps with the bitey, stingy bit).

as a massage oil, lavender can help relieve joint and muscle pain.

all this from one little bottle! and from one pretty plant.

there have been media claims that lavender oil has properties that mimic sex hormones, but the evidence is shaky. if you have any concerns about these claims, i highly suggest doing some further research for yourself.

natural body lovin’ - part two!

household secret identity number two: the ONION!

the humble onion, consumed in nearly every household in western society, and countless other cultures around the world. it's such an unassuming part of the grocery shopping that no one thinks any further about after it's chopped and thrown in dinner.
but onions are a many layered thing. underneath their flavoursome skin are antibacterial properties that have been used for centuries (literally). Chinese and early American settlers used onions to help treat coughs, colds, and bacterial infections. modern complementary medicine is still using it as an antibacterial for small cuts, and also as relief for wasp and bee stings (just rub the cut side of an onion on the sting).
the World Health Organisation advocates the use of onion to prevent poor appetite and atherosclerosis (a condition in which fatty material collects along the walls of arteries), and onion extract to treat colds, coughs, and bronchitis.
and the most amazing onion secret?
it's a cancer preventative.
cultures with high levels of onion consumption in their diet have up to half the level of stomach cancer prevalence compared to other westernised cultures.

need any more convincing? (if you do, try here for more info)

natural body lovin'

this post is going to be about exactly what it says it's about, loving your body naturally! i will be trying out and posting about all kinds of natural remedies for everything from common ailments like cuts and bites, to specifics like a natural decongestant for a chesty cough.
(i've even got, not one, but three natural hangover cures lined up to try out, which of course means that because i am a thorough, fair and honest blogger, i'll tell you that i don't drink all that much anymore! so i will be testing them on my man. he doesn't know this yet, hehe)

but to start us off, let's look at a few general items...

what do you think they have in common?
three of them are common household items that have secret identities! the fourth, rose hip oil, has been gaining in main stream popularity over the past few years, and i thought i'd throw in in for good measure. i'll be looking at all four of these natural health goldmines over the next few days, but for now...

let's start with garlic, just because if it were a man, i would be having a love affair with it. i love garlic. i love the way it smells, i love the way it tastes, i love the way that it flavours other foods it's cooking with. but garlic has a secret, one that makes it all the more loveable: it is a natural medicine chest all by itself!
i know that sounds like a bold claim, but garlic has well known antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. seriously, stop and take a moment to really understand all those 'anti's coming from a single tiny little clove!
if you can stomach raw garlic, eat it if you feel a sore throat coming on, or mix it in with some honey and you've got a sucker punch of natural cold fighting power right there. cook with it often, and recent studies are suggesting that you will be helping to lower your risk of getting cancer while simultaneously aiding your cardiovascular health by keeping your arteries clean and clear (as a side note, i am a scientist when it comes to these kind of claims; i like to see cold hard proof, which is why i have underlined the word 'suggesting'. however, i truly believe that living as natural a lifestyle as possible, eating a diet focusing on unprocessed foods will take you much closer to being disease free than someone who does not. it only makes sense, our bodies are natural machines, they need natural fuel to run).
as a home remedy though, garlic is wonderful for it's cold fighting powers and it's antiseptic nature. rub the exposed face of a cut garlic clove on small cuts and grazes to keep them clean and germ free, naturally. plus, if you're any where near me, i'll probably want to make friends with you.

*as a bit of a disclaimer: i am not a doctor. this post is based around my own personal experience, and research that i have done, so please use it wisely and do not use it in lieu of professional medical advice.
ta :)
